Victims To Survivor

Kamiya Richards

I was 9 years old when I was burned in a house fire. it was hard for me to accept the scars and they made me very insecure and have a low self-esteem. But over the years of going to Burn Camp helped me become a survivor from victim. Also meeting Andrea I felt like I had so much in common with her, and she knew exactly what I was going through. Andrea is like a big sister to me, and she inspires me to accept me for me and know that I am a beautiful young lady.

I was in a house fire when I was 5 years old. I was the cause of my accident. There was a lit candle in the hallway out  of curiosity and boredom I took the end of my shirt and swiped it across the candle three times. The first two must have been my warnings to stop because nothing happened until my third swipe. Fire quickly spread to the top of my shirt and eventually my entire upper part of my body was on fire. Dealing with this as a child was hard very difficult. I had to endure teasing and name calling from every type child. Luckily I was blessed to have my mother there who taught me about self love and drilled into my head daily that I was NO different from anyone else. Scars or no scars.
